The New Viking 62
Several important announcements about the Viking Yacht Company came out of the recently completed Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Although one of the show’s highlights was the introduction of the new Viking 55 Convertible, a pronouncement also was made about another new model, the Viking 62 Convertible, which will premiere at the Viking VIP Boat Show Preview in Riviera Beach, Florida, February 1-2, 2013.
The image above of hull number one was taken just prior to the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show. Over the next several weeks, the boat will be finished, Palm Beach Towers will install its tuna tower, and Atlantic Marine Electronics will complete its navigation, communication and entertainment systems installation. The new 62 is available in either 3 or 4 stateroom layouts.
The 62 Convertible is a showpiece in the Viking tradition with a fusion of leading edge engineering. To optimize its strength to weight ratio, the composite cored hull is resin infused with a high modulus of DuPont’s Kevlar, carbon fiber and knitted fiberglass laminates selected to reduce weight while increasing the overall physical properties of the structure. Similarly, interior stateroom and hanging locker doors, as well as cabinet fronts throughout the yacht incorporate honeycomb coring for further weight reduction. As with all new Viking models each introduction is designed to set a higher performance standard in its class so the 62 Convertible also has recessed engine cooling water pickups, a refined propeller pocket entry to enhance flow to the five-bladed wheels for reduced noise with better traction, and modified architecture to the struts and rudders adding to an efficient and slippery running surface calculated to deliver speeds of up to 42 knots with a pair of Caterpillar C32-A engines rated at 1,925 mhp.
